“I would like to apologise to the nation…”: Ali Zafar breaks silence after Eid outfit controversy

Pakistani singer and actor Ali Zafar recently addressed the debate surrounding his Eid outfits with a sarcastic message on social media, drawing mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.

Ali Zafar is one of Pakistan’s most recognised entertainers, known internationally for his hit songs, television appearances, and films. Over the years he has also built a strong digital presence, with more than six million followers on social media. His popularity has continued to grow, especially with the release of several regional song covers widely appreciated by fans.

Among the covers that received praise were Laila O Laila, Balu Batiyaan, and Allay. Many listeners also admired his soulful rendition of the naat Balaghalu La Be Kamaleyihi. Apart from his music career, Ali Zafar often shares glimpses of his personal life online. He is married to Ayesha Fazli, and the couple has two children.

This year, however, the singer became a topic of discussion for reasons beyond music. During Eid celebrations, Ali Zafar wore outfits that stood out and quickly attracted attention on social media. One of his looks included a rust-brown shirt paired with a laacha or dhoti-style bottom that some users compared to a skirt-like outfit. In another appearance, he wore a mint green see-through kurta while twinning with his wife, Ayesha Fazli.

Soon after, photos and videos of the outfits circulated online, prompting social media users to debate the fashion choices. While some praised the singer for experimenting with traditional clothing styles, others criticized the looks and described them as unusual.

Amid the online discussion, Ali Zafar posted a sarcastic apology in response to the criticism. He wrote:

“I would like to apologise to the nation for wearing a see-through kurta without a banyan, and for the very serious act of watering plants in a traditional Ajrak dhoti on Eid. I understand this has been one of the most pressing national and global issues affecting everyone’s lives lately, and I will do my best never to repeat this grave mistake again. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

His message quickly circulated online and sparked another wave of reactions.

Some users took the apology in good humour and praised the singer for responding playfully. Others, however, felt he was dismissing criticism rather than addressing it seriously. A few social media users also accused celebrities in Pakistan of promoting LGBTQ trends.

The discussion around Ali Zafar’s Eid fashion continues to circulate online, highlighting how celebrity style choices can quickly become a topic of public debate on social media.
