Mehwish Hayat has opened up about one of the most talked-about decisions of her career: her transition from television to films, as seen in the song Billi.
The popular Pakistani actor recently made a strong return to television with the drama serial Dayan, which received impressive viewership and strong TRPs. Over the years, Mehwish has been part of several notable dramas, including Dil Lagi, Mere Qatil Mere Dildar, Thori Si Wafa Chahiye, Unsuni, Man Jali, Phir Chand Pe Dastak, Mirat-ul-Uroos and Rubaru.
She has also built a successful film career with hits such as Punjab Nahi Jaungi, Actor in Law, Chhalawa and London Nahi Jaunga. Mehwish will next be seen in the horror-comedy film Zombied alongside Fahad Mustafa, scheduled for release on Eid al-Adha.
Recently, Mehwish appeared on Something Haute’s talk show The Haute Talk, hosted by Amna Isani, where she reflected on her decision to make her film debut with an item song. Fahad Mustafa, who was also part of the conversation, recalled a funny incident from the Billi shoot.
Talking about performing the song, Mehwish said, “It was enjoyable and fun to perform in Billi, and the result was amazing. Although I was tired and bruised while doing it, I was also nervous. But when I went to the location and saw the people and the setup, I was amazed. It was my transition from dramas to films, and it was a bold move. It could have gone wrong as well, but I knew one thing — that I had a film face. Javed Sheikh once told me this when I was doing a drama. Fizza and Nabeel approached me after watching my performances. I did it, and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. Fizza and Nabeel made sure to execute it in a way that made it look like a proper part of the film and it really looked like the gangsters party scene after success.”
Her comments highlighted how carefully the song was planned and how important the decision became for her film career. What could have been a risky move turned into a major turning point, helping Mehwish establish herself as one of Pakistan’s leading film stars.
Fahad Mustafa also praised her performance and said the spotlight during the shoot was entirely on her.
“We were only reacting to her dance. The real performer was Mehwish Hayat, and she was perfect. Let me tell you an interesting incident: the owner of the Billi shooting location fell from a height while watching Mehwish Hayat perform. Obviously, it had such a spark that he literally fell while watching it.”
His anecdote added a humorous touch to the discussion and showed the impact Mehwish’s performance had on those present at the shoot.
