Veteran Indian actress Neena Gupta has addressed unexpected pregnancy rumours that began circulating online after she attended a high-profile wedding reception in Hyderabad.
Speculation started after Gupta appeared at the reception hosted for actors Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, where photos of the actress quickly spread across social media. Some online users began suggesting that her appearance hinted at a pregnancy, an idea that surprised many, given that Gupta is 66.
Responding to the chatter, Gupta dismissed the rumours in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, choosing humor rather than frustration to address the situation.
“This is all I need, a real-life Badhaai Ho,” she joked, referencing her popular film Badhaai Ho, which tells the story of a middle-aged woman who unexpectedly becomes pregnant.
Gupta then clarified that the speculation had no basis in reality.
“There is no Badhaai Ho. I am not pregnant. The truth is that the saree material was thick, which made me look bulky at the event.”
The actress also took the opportunity to poke fun at the online discussion that followed the event. Rather than dismissing it harshly, she suggested that the reaction reflected changing social attitudes.
“But I must say, I love all this speculation about my pregnancy at my age. It shows we are evolving as a nation.”
Gupta has long been regarded as one of the most respected performers in Indian cinema and television, known for her candid personality and willingness to challenge traditional expectations. Over the years, she has also been open about her personal life.
During the 1980s, Gupta was romantically linked to legendary West Indies cricketer Viv Richards. Their relationship drew considerable attention at the time, and Gupta later chose to raise their daughter, Masaba Gupta, as a single mother.
Masaba has since become a well-known fashion designer and television personality in her own right.
In 2008, Gupta married Delhi-based chartered accountant Vivek Mehra. The couple has largely kept their personal life private, though Gupta occasionally shares glimpses of it in interviews and on social media.
