Pamaal, the popular Green Entertainment prime-time drama serial, has been a hit with viewers, captivating audiences with its gripping storyline. Written by Zanjabeel Asim Shah and directed by Khizer Idrees, the series tells the story of Malika, a writer facing personal and financial challenges, including the illness of her husband. As the drama unfolds, Malika navigates through tough times both before and after her marriage.
Khizer Idrees, the director behind the success of Pamaal, recently appeared on Fuchsia Magazine, where he discussed various aspects of the show, including the romance depicted between the lead characters. In his conversation, he revealed some interesting behind-the-scenes details about the challenges of filming romantic scenes, particularly focusing on actor Usman Mukhtar’s initial reluctance to perform these scenes.
“There were a few romantic scenes in the drama that Usman refused to do, saying, ‘I can’t do it, it will be difficult for me to perform such scenes, please change it,’” Khizer Idrees shared. “After that, we pushed him to perform those scenes, and he did them well. However, whenever such scenes came up, he felt reluctant. Usman Mukhtar used to say, ‘I salute those actors who do romance on screen; it is difficult.’”
Despite his initial hesitation, Usman Mukhtar ultimately delivered the scenes, although his discomfort was evident. Idrees went on to explain that the portrayal of romance in Pamaal was crafted to be believable and relatable, especially considering the dynamic between a married couple. “I shot believable scenes between a married couple, which the audience could relate to,” Idrees said, highlighting the importance of realism in their performances.

The director also spoke about improvising certain scenes to capture the right emotions, particularly the hospital scene, which depicted the emotional aftermath of the characters’ temporary separation and conflict. Idrees admitted that the hospital scene needed additional emotional depth to resonate with viewers, prompting him to make adjustments during filming.
However, not all aspects of the show were met with unanimous approval. In Episode 12 of Pamaal, Usman Mukhtar and Saba Qamar performed bold romantic scenes that sparked severe backlash from the public. Fans expressed discomfort with the intimacy shown between the characters Malika and Raza, with many commenting that the scenes were uncomfortable to watch in a family setting.
The controversy surrounding these scenes highlighted the challenges that come with portraying romance on screen, particularly in a family-oriented drama. The backlash raised questions about the appropriateness of such scenes in a mainstream television series and sparked debates about the boundaries of on-screen intimacy.
Despite the mixed reactions, the drama continues to captivate a large audience, with its intense storyline and complex characters. Khizer Idrees and the cast of Pamaal have managed to create a series that resonates deeply with viewers, even as it tackles sensitive and challenging topics.
As the show progresses, it will be interesting to see how the dynamics between Malika and her husband, as well as the evolving relationships between the other characters, continue to unfold. Pamaal has undoubtedly become a significant part of the prime-time television landscape, with its blend of drama, romance, and emotional depth sparking both praise and controversy.
